Père David‘s rock squirrel (Sciurotamias davidianus)

Animals with mumps?

Père David‘s rock squirrels occasionally have big cheeks - but the animals are not sick! They stockpile for the winter, when food is scarce. In fall, you can observe how they fill their cheek pouches with food and hide it away in their burrows.
Their name goes back to Father Armand David (1826-1900). The French catholic missionary and naturalist was the first to discover this squirrel species on one of his voyages to China.
