Guinea pig

Guinea pig (Cavia porcellus)

A misleading name

Guinea pigs are rodents - they only share their squeaks with pigs. The squeaks probably gave them part of their name. The first guinea pigs were imported by traders from South America to Europe.
Guinea pigs were domesticated around 5000 to 7000 years ago in the Andes. Originally, they were raised as food. Nowadays, they are still an important meat source in many regions of the world.
