Saxony chicken - Engdangered mountain inhabitant
Around 1880 breeders began to pair robust country chickens with Minorca-Langshan crossbreeds in the Ore Mountains. Their breeding goal was to rear an animal with a small comb that could be kept in the harsh mountain climate – the so-called “Saxony chicken”.
Due to the Second World War and the import of high-performance breeds this valuable breed has become extremely rare today. The Free State of Saxony is trying to counteract this by selectively giving Saxony chickens to breeders.
