For example, almost all of our farm animals like to be petted and scratched. Not only can you enter the enclosure of the goats and alpacas and make friends with the pelt-noses but you can even get their living space back on track as a "junior animal keeper" - tools in a handy size are always available. You can also sit with the guinea pigs and watch them eat, cuddle, squeak, run and sleep. Meanwhile, our pigs and goats look forward to an extensive massage with a brush or harrow. The main focus of our Lusatian farm is the importance of old farm animal breeds and wild bees. This is also reflected in our animal population. Vogtland red cattle, Danish protest pig and German saddlebacks are examples for that. Many old domestic livestock breeds have shrunk significantly in their population and are now endangered because high-performance breeding promises greater yields for farmers. However, they are extremely worthy of protection in terms of agrobiodiversity and have other advantages. For example, old breeds are more resistant to climate change and they are a source of important genetic resources.
Wild bees on the other hand are an immensely important component in the production chain of crops. Honeybees alone are not enough to ensure their pollination. Wild insects increase the fruit set worldwide even when a lot of honeybees are already visiting a field.
