Domestic donkey (Equus asinus asinus )

Thuringian Forest Donkey

This breed was originally bred as a "miller's donkey" or "stone donkey". The famous Wartburg donkeys already carried food and drink up to the castle for the inhabitants in the Middle Ages. Even in ancient Thuringian legends, they mentioned donkeys a lot. Despite this historical significance, the Thuringian Forest Donkey was only recognized as a separate breed in 2019 and was almost extinct at the time, with only a few remaining animals.
