Rock Cavy

Mammal

Rock Cavy (Kerodon ripestris )

A guinea pig in a tree?

The Rock Cavy inhabits dry, rocky areas with low bushes. It finds refuge in rock crevices, under boulders and in burrows. It is a good climber - not only on rocks but also in trees. Despite its looks, its closest relative is not the domestic guinea pig, but the much larger capybara.

Rock cavies are heavily hunted for their meat but are not yet endangered.
