Salvadori's white-eared parakeet (Pyrrhura griseipectus)

Caring fathers

Salvadori's white-eared parrots are very social birds. They live in groups of up to 20 individuals, grooming each other and spending nights in cavities. Chicks are initially fed only by the female in nest, but later both parents contribute. Once they fledge after five weeks, the father takes almost all of their care.

Salvadori's white-eared parrots are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and capture for the pet trade.
